Musculoskeletal physiotherapy

The term orthopedic conditions refer to diseases that affect the human musculoskeletal system. All the anatomical structures are capable to develop pathology. The difference with the overuse injuries discussed above is that the causes are more complicated. They are related to fractures, surgical operations, road traffic and occupational accidents and other violent and ballistic factors. Orthopaedic injuries also arise from poor posture, bad habits, poor ergonomics, sports and of course due to physiological aging process.

Musculoskeletal physiotherapy at SPL uses the basic sciences of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics as a background principle in patients’ assessment and management. The main aim is to treat each case with the use of specialized physical modalities and techniques, and by avoiding the use of drugs when possible. Some complex cases after surgery due to degeneration of the knee, hip, ankle, shoulder and elbow, where partial or total replacement of the joint has been done need extra help with prescribed medicaments or injections. Physiotherapy is also indicated after spinal reconstructive surgery such as discectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusion and kyphoplastic procedures.

Finally, a large part of the direct correlation between orthopedic medicine and physiotherapy is that of accidents from sports or traffic accidents, for which preoperatively or postoperatively the intervention of physiotherapy is deemed necessary.
